How to increase immunity? What causes low immune system and low immunity? The immune system is inside your body, and the bacteria are outside your body.

Human immunity , specifically the adaptive immune response , is based on recognizing and remembering molecules which pose a threat. After fighting off the initial assault, the body remembers the pernicious molecule via the long-lived memory T- and B-cells. Even simple unicellular organisms such as bacteria possess a rudimentary immune system in the form of enzymes that protect against bacteriophage infections.


Other basic immune mechanisms evolved in ancient eukaryotes and remain in their modern descendants, such as plants and invertebrates. Now, Loyola University Health System researchers have discovered how bacteria perform this essential task. Immune proteins like acute phase proteins (like complement) and antibodies bind to the surface of bacteria by a process called opsonisation.


Opsonised bacteria are, therefore, coated with molecules that phagocytic cells recognise and respond to.

Gut bacteria maintain a balanced immune system. Bad gut bacteria can lead to disease. If a bacteria or virus does get into the body, the immune system tries to detect and eliminate it before it can make itself at home and reproduce. A healthy immune system can defeat invading pathogens as shown above, where two bacteria that cause gonorrhea are no match for the large phagocyte , called a neutrophil , that engulfs and kills them (see arrows). Crucially, it can distinguish our tissue from foreign tissue — self from non-self.

The microbes that support our immune system play a critically important. A type of protein in the immune system called complement protein attacks. Phagocytes recognize opsonized bacteria , engulfing and digesting them by phagocytosis.


Once digeste epitopes are. Obviously, if the immune system successfully recognises, consumes and destroys all of the organisms that are present in any given infection, then that organism has failed to establish itself in the body, and thus cannot cause disease.

These are called antigens. The proteins on the surfaces of bacteria, fungi and viruses, for example, are all antigens. When the antigens bind to, for example, special receptors on the defense cells, a series of cell processes is started.

But as research has progresse. Tumors may elude the immune system , but researchers are harnessing reprogrammed bacteria to destroy cancer cells in mice. The role of the immune system — a collection of structures and processes within the body — is to protect against disease or other potentially damaging foreign bodies.


When functioning properly, the immune system identifies a variety of threats, including viruses, bacteria and parasites,.
