They are activated by antigens presented on, for example, dendritic cells and B cells.


Not only do they have a fond taste for pathogens, but they also secrete communication chemicals called cytokines. These chemicals tell other cells (other phagocytes and cells in the adaptive immune system ) that they should get their act together and prepare for an attack.
