It is a type of disorder where the mental functioning decreases because of a physical disease or medical condition instead of a psychiatric disease.


This disorder is different from dementia. In general, organic brain syndromes cause varying extent of confusion, delirium ( severe , short term losses of brain function), agitation, and dementia (long-term, often progressive, losses of brain function). Chronic organic brain syndrome is long-term. The distinction between these two organic conditions is most clearly derived from the history of the mode of onset of the disorder. A more specific medical term for the acute subset of organic brain syndromes is delirium.


This is a general term that refers to physical disorders that cause a decrease in mental function, usually not including psychiatric disorders. Symptoms vary with the specific disease. Sometimes the term organic mental disorder is used interchangeably with the terms organic brain syndrome (OBS), chronic organic brain syndrome , or neurocognitive disorder—this latter term is the one used more commonly now.


The syndrome can be classified as acute and chronic. Acute organic brain syndrome most commonly occurs due to intoxication, drug overuse, infections, pain. The changes observed in patients with physical changes to the brain can be both neurological and psychological in origin.
