I didn’t realized it was considered an autoimmune disease. Guillain- Barre syndrome is type of autoimmune disorder. Autoimmune disease affecting the peripheral nervous system. Guillain–Barré syndrome (GBS) is a rapid-onset muscle weakness caused by the immune system damaging the peripheral nervous system. The initial symptoms are typically changes in sensation or pain along with muscle weakness, beginning in the feet and hands.


Most people recover, even those with severe cases. When someone has GBS, the immune system begins attacking toe body’s nerve cells, which then weakens their ability to send signals to to the brain. As a result, the muscles then cannot respond to nerve signals,. Such a condition is created by T cell-mediated cellular immune reaction targeted toward peripheral myelin, a fatty layer that insulates electrically the nerve fiber. Specifically, the immune system of people with GBS targets the nerves of the peripheral nervous system.
