Loss of memory for a short period of time

Short-term memory loss is a primary feature of dementia or Alzheimer’s. This is the kind of cognitive decline that usually occurs with aging. When a person has short-term memory loss due to Alzheimer’s disease or dementia, there can be sudden memory or attention deficit. Sometimes, a sudden short term memory loss can be caused by a physical trauma.


For instance a head injury to the temporal lobe of the brain has been known to causes symptoms of short term memory loss. This type of memory loss is caused by extreme circumstances and may include psychological pressure or abuse.

People sometimes associate the concept of short term memory problems with the kind of amnesia you might see on a daytime soap opera,.

These tests are most commonly used in medical settings to diagnose or determine the extent of memory dysfunction in patients. Immediate or short -term memory is our capacity to hold a very limited amount of information in a temporary buffer for a short period of time (from a few seconds to a couple of minutes).
