Divalproex medicine

Is divalproex the same as Depakote? What is divalproex 5mg? Divalproex sodium may also be used for purposes not listed in this medication guide.


This medicine is sometimes used together with other seizure medications. WARNINGS: Rarely, this medication has caused serious (sometimes fatal) liver problems, usually within the first months of starting treatment. The generic name for this medication is divalproex.

Divalproex belongs to a group of drugs called anticonvulsants or anti-epileptic drugs. This medication was originally developed as an anti-seizure medication. In the last years we have found that it also affects mood. Like other “mood stabilizers”, divalproex can prevent large or rapid changes in mood. It does not seem to have any effect on day to day mood changes, only “cyclic” or unprovoked changes.


The medication is used for treating manic episodes in people with bipolar disorder, as well as seizures in people with epilepsy. Divalproex (Depakote) is a moderately priced drug used to prevent seizures caused by some forms of epilepsy. This drug is slightly less popular than other comparable drugs. It restores balance to the neurotransmitters in the brain. You should take this medication as directed by your physician.


In this case “delayed-release” simply means that it is enteric coate and thus the release of the medicine is “delayed” until it passes through the stomach. Usually dosed 2-times daily. Having tried this once, I would not recommend it at all!


Suggest trying Lithium in small doses if the NP thinks your mom is having mood swings. Try something that is an ion before giving a medication that is really going to change the way the brain reacts with many side effects.
